The 18th Century
St Albans has been a highway town since Roman times. Watling Street, the old Roman road between London and Chester, brought trade and traffic.
The 18th century was the golden age of the coaching trade. Step into our recreated coaching inn parlour, sit on an original wooden settle and see authentic objects from two hundred years ago. Beer mugs, glasses, gloves, and even a game of cards interrupted on the inn table evoke the spirit of the turnpike – and the fear of the highwayman!
