Roman Artefact Handling Sessions (Tuesday-Friday) Key Stage 3

Our ever-popular artefact handling sessions allow the children the opportunity to handle real Roman artefacts. The session is based around the theme of ‘Everyday Life in Roman Britain’.

Life in a Medieval Town Key Stage 3

The students will examine a variety of artefacts (real and replica) to learn about life in towns at this time.

This can be accompanied by a medieval Town Trail, in which the students are taken to see some medieval buildings and sites in St Albans. This includes an exciting tour of the unique medieval Clock Tower.

Medieval Town Trail

This fascinating trail will enable your class to gain an insight into what medieval St Albans would have looked like and to gain an appreciation of just how important the town was at this time with connections being made to; the Wars of the Roses, the Peasants Revolt, the 100 Years War, Magna Carta and Pilgrimage. The highlight of the trail is a tour of the unique medieval Clock Tower.

Victorians on Trial (Citizenship, History, English)

These trials are re-enacted in the actual building that the original trials took place. All characters, charges, and sentences are authentic. The dialogue is historically accurate and is taken from the trial transcripts in the local press. Contrasts are made with how the criminal justice system today deals with the same youth offences.

'Trial of Mary Ansell' schools session in St Albans Old Magistrates Court

The Trial of Mary Ansell (Citizenship, History, English & Drama)

Mary Ansell was put on trial in Hertford in 1899 for the murder of her sister. She was accused of sending her a cake laced with poison! This exciting improvised trial session takes place in the Victorian Old Courtroom. Every child will have the opportunity to to take on the role of either a witness, prosecutor or juror. They will decide for themselves, based on the evidence, if Mary was guilty or innocent! Follow up materials are available.
