Justice and Fair Measure
The good government of St Albans depended on justice in law. Its prosperity required fairness in trade. Enduring symbols of the city authorities were created in the form of the civic regalia, including this splendid silver-gilt Mace of St Albans, remade by Charles II at the Restoration, which is on show here and still in use for civic functions.
Eighteenth and nineteenth century weights and measures range from the mighty brass Imperial Bushel, for measuring grain, to the delicate Sovereign balance, to check the weight of coins. Another fascinating rarity is an 1842 Bank of St Albans £5 note.
