Description

Monochrome etching showing St Albans Clock Tower viewed from High Street, by L.J.Cranstone, signed bottom left in plate, dated 1849.
A crowd of people gather around the public water pump which stood in front of the Clock Tower, while in the distance in Market Place, the market is going on in the the old open-sided Market House. This building was knocked down and replaced by the Corn Exchange building in 1857. There had been complaints about the old building for at least half a century before it was eventually demolished, since its open sides allowed the rain in, spoiling farmers' sacks of grain.
