Description

Monochrome photographic print showing the view looking up George Street, St Albans, c.1905, looking towards High Street, with the coaching entrance to the old George Inn and a barrow boy on the left side of the street. Includes the building now occupied by The Tudor Tavern.
Before Telford's construction of Verulam Road in 1825, George Street was the main road into St Albans from the north-west, and before the rise of St Peter's Street, between the two world wars, it was one of the city's principal shopping streets.
