Period

Georgian (1714 - 1837)

Description

Typeset letter to "our very good Lord, Lord Viscount Cranburn, Custos Rotulorum [Lord Lieutenant] of the County of Hertford." The letter is dated 1775, at which time Viscount Cranbourne and Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire was James Cecil, 1st Marquess of Salisbury (1748 - 1823), whose family lived at Hatfield House.
The letter, from the council chamber at St James's in London, concerns the increased number of "Rogues, Vagabonds, Beggars, and other idle and disorderly persons". It urges Viscount Cranburn to impress upon the Justices of the Peace in the county of Hertford to do all in their power to search out and apprehend them.
