Description

"The London and Birmingham Railroad (1837): Entrance to the Tunnel at Watford" by Thomas Talbot Bury (1811-77); hand-coloured aquatint by N Fielding. Published September 18th 1837 by Ackermann & Co., 96 Strand.Railway navvies are still at work in the distance and time has not yet begun to soften the newly-dug cutting. But now we can see the new trains: the third class coaches - actually open trucks - are nearest the engine, with first class carriages to the rear, away from the smoke and noise. There are now two tunnels; this is the western.
