"Old Shop, George Street, S. Albans."
Plate 50 of 100 from part 5 (number 7) of Holmes Winters' series of etchings "The Last of Old St Albans".
"Old Shop, George Street, S. Albans. Sketched Sep 19 1898."
This old shop later became the Tudor Tavern pub, on the corner of George Street and Verulam Road, which is still standing today.
Drawn and etched by Holmes Winter.
Before Telford's construction of Verulam Road in 1825, George Street was the main road into St Albans from the north-west, and before the rise of St Peter's Street, between the two world wars, it was one of the city's principal shopping streets.
