"The old Police Station alley, St Albans. Sketch Mar 18th 1889." This alleyway, which runs between Chequer Street and Market Place, is also known as Sovereign Way.
Note caption is dated 1889 but date in bottom right hand corner of image has date [18]97.

St Albans council built a new single-storey police station in Sovereign Alley, behind the Town Hall, in 1860. There had been a town police force since 1836 and the St Albans police force maintained their independence from the Hertfordshire Constabulary until 1947.
