Our face is the part of us that displays our identity – so we are all programmed to be interested in others’ faces. Our exhibition mainly contains faces from the past, whether local, remarkable, or just famous. It shows how portraits were transmitted in the days before film and television, most obviously through paintings, prints and still photographs, but also through important official media like coins or postage stamps. We’ll also look at that other vital use of the face in the expression of our emotions.
