Residents First in the Courtroom

Posted on: 25th January 2015 By: Sue Davies

Today we have been talking to lots of people about the plans to develop the town hall into a new museum and gallery.   The event was part of Residents First Weekend and organised by the charity that is raising funds for the project, St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust.  The exhibition designers from Urban Salon, members of the museum team and staff from the University of Hertfordshire were on hand to explain how the designs are progressing.

It was fun showing people around.  It was great seeing how people react to the building.  In the photo above some visitors are admiring the lantern in centre of the courtroom.   It is pretty but I am not sure that it helps the acoustics!   I also loved hearing people's memories about events that took place in the building.  My favourite conversation was with a couple who told me about the dances that used to take place in the assembly rooms decades ago.  They are still dancing on Monday afternoons at the de Havilland social club in Hatfield.  I am hoping that we will be able to invite them to a tea dance in the assembly room before too long!
