Engraved portrait of Lady Jane Gray (Grey). Engraved by W. M. (William Marshall, after Willem and Magdalena de Passe), no date. The National Portrait Gallery also holds this engraving, their copy was published 1648.Lady Jane Grey (1537 - 1554), a great-granddaughter of King Henry VII, was proclaimed Queen of England for nine days during 1553 in an unsuccessful bid to prevent the accession of the Catholic Mary Tudor. When Mary was proclaimed Queen, Jane, her husband, Lord Gilford Dudley, and her father were imprisoned in the Tower of London. She and her husband were tried for high treason in November 1553, found guilty and sentenced to death. They were both beheaded at Tower Hill on February 12th 1554 (not 1553 as stated on this engraving).
