Photographs from the Wheeler Excavations
St Albans Museums are fortunate to hold a large collection of glass plate negatives which document the excavations at Verulamium led by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in the 1930s.
Verulamium Museum first opened it’s doors to the public on Monday 8th May 1939. It was built to house the finds excavated from the site of Verulamium during these excavations, a collection which has been added to over the years. The finds range from large mosaics, amongst the best in this country, to the small objects of everyday life.
The gallery below contains a few highlights from the Wheeler Excavation Nagative collection but there are nearly 700 more available to view online.
