Interior at Theobalds House near Cheshunt c.1630. Etched by S Sparrow, junior, in 1800 from an original oil painting.This scene gives some idea of the magnificence of the Palace at Theobalds. King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria appear as small figures on the right.Theobalds was the home of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burleigh (also spelt Burghley) (b.1520 d.1598). Cecil was the chief advisor of Queen Elizabeth I for most of her reign, and Lord High Treasurer from 1572. Among his many titles, he was Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire between 15881598.He was also the father of Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury,who was responsible for tearing down most of the old palace of Hatfield House and building the new Jacobean house which still stands today. Hatfield House has been the home of the Cecil family ever since.
