The Smile-ing Boys’ Project is the creation of internationally acclaimed artist, Kay Rufai, in order to promote positive mental well-being for BAME (Black and Minority Ethnicity) boys that has been running at Verulam School in St Albans. The purpose of the project is to encourage engagement and reflection of one’s identity as a young black male growing up in England, allowing the boys the opportunity to explore issues around stereotypes, pressures, a sense of belonging, representation in the media etc. so that they are able to feel a sense of self-worth and pride, making positive choices as they come of age.

Come and see the wonderful portraits of Verulam boys smiling– a contrast to the common negative depictions of black boys perpetuated by the media.
