Untitled (Helmet and Darts), 2019 Mixed Media

Save Us From Ourselves, 2019, Mixed Media

Maria Meyer works primarily with existing objects, arranging them as conceptual sculptures, installations and videos which explore human relationships with artefacts.

Meyer draws on the similarities between our objectification and commodification of both domestic and natural items. She explores our immense desire as humans to be surrounded by material objects, which form not only part of our identities, but are collected for both their function and aesthetics. Intrigued by the acquisition and disposal of items, her practice makes comments on the detrimental environmental impact of this need for material things.

After graduating from a BA in Fine Art at Middlesex University Maria Meyer went on to pursue a career in graphic design and eventually advertising for the fashion industry. Taking time out to start a family has given her the time to return to her art practice. Meyer is currently studying for an MA in Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire and is due to graduate in 2020.
