EYFS and Key Stage 1

Nursery and EYFS children can become familiar with the museum environment in our Storytime. Taking place in our learning studio, the session starts with a traditional story on the carpet and a chance to handle a museum artefact, followed by a themed craft and picture trail around the museum as an introduction to exploring.

In Tremendous Toys through a selection of historic toys from our museum collection children start to learn about chronology and how toys have changed as technology has developed. As well as making comparisons there’s plenty of time to play with our collection of replica traditional toys. Combine this session with seeing our Victorian Childhood exhibition between 12th February 2027 – 6th May 2027

Also, for this age group we have Ruby Bridges Starts School an introduction to celebrating and learning about black history through Ruby’s journey from the first black student at an all-white school in the southern United States to becoming a civil rights leader at a young age.

From November 2026 to March 2027 Treasure Table Still Life for Key Stage 1 involves creating and drawing their own arrangement of objects introducing composition through shared decision making, alongside visiting Still Lives: Hepworth Wakefield Touring Exhibition

These three sessions take place in the Learning Studio at St Albans Museum + Gallery and there is the option to add on extra time to explore further around the museum and its current exhibitions.

Year 2 classes can also visit Verulamium Museum for our Roman Market Workshop
