Inspiration - the King's Army re-enact with historic accuracy many of the battles of the civil wars and still honour the memory of King Charles.
Stepping thro' History
Hard by the Clock Tower, in the shadow of the Eleanor Cross (marked today by a circle of seating) in 1643, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire was reading a Royal Proclaimation in an attempt to raise an army for King Charles.
Up Holywell Hill comes Oliver Cromwell and his troop of cavalry. What a nuisance!
Cromwell arrests and shoots the High Sheriff.
The new recruits engage in a skirmish with the parliamentarians in Verulamium park, even though there is little probability of a pay-day.
The King's men capture Cromwell and unlike the dishonourable parliamentary rebels, decide to imprison him in the Old Fighting Cocks instead of killing him.
The 'I'm just nipping to the pub' secret tunnels made by the Abbey monks allow Cromwell to escape that night.
What a diabolical nuisance!
Without those tunnels the Civil Wars could have turned out very differently.
