This year St Albans Museum + Gallery will be covered with forget-me-nots for Dementia Action Week
From the 16-22 May 2022 there will be forget-me-nots on our balcony and railings knitted, crocheted and sewn by residents of St Albans. There will also be a display of artworks from St Albans Rainbow Trail members on our railings in Market Place and a chance to pick up a template and make your own forget-me-not artwork.
Each year, the Alzheimer's Society work with individuals and organisations across the UK to encourage people to ‘act on dementia’. This year’s theme is diagnosis and if you have any questions or concerns there are lots of resources on their website.
Music from Herts Musical Memories - Wednesday 18 May
On Wednesday 18 May Herts Musical Memories memories will be singing in the Assembly Room at two special drop in performances.
The two singing slots will be at 11am and 2pm and you can drop in to the Assembly Room to see them for free.
Herts Musical Memories delivers singing sessions for people living with dementia and their carers.
Attending a singing session is a fun and stimulating activity, providing health benefits for both those living with dementia and their carers. With regular attendance group singing can improve sociability, increase self-confidence, and decrease anxiety. For those with memory problems, singing familiar songs helps connect them to their memories.
Understanding memory loss and dementia diagnosis
Getting a diagnosis can be daunting, but we believe it’s better to know. And so do 91% of people affected by dementia. Over 9 in10 people affected by dementia say getting a diagnosis has benefitted them. It allows them to receive practical advice and support, to plan for the future, and can even offer a sense of relief in knowing what’s going on. Alzheimer’s Society offers dedicated advice and support for anyone concerned that they or someone close to them may be experiencing signs of dementia. It’s time to act on dementia, support is only a phone call or a click away.

St Albans Rainbow Trail
In collaboration with the Alzheimer's society, the 'Forget Me Not' visual arts display in Market Place aims to raise awareness of Dementia and to spread the message and importance of 'Getting a Diagnosis' within our community. Artworks have been created by the StART community from St Albans City and District and surrounding areas as part of Dementia Action Week. The artworks convey personal stories and messages around Dementia and have been curated by Preet Cox.
We'd also like everyone to create their own Forget Me Not artworks to display in your window during Dementia Action Week. You can download a colouring sheet below or there will be copies available in the museum from Friday 13 May 2022.
