South Asia is a massive geographic area, and includes eight modern countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The UK has a long and complex history with these countries. It has been enriched, both nationally and locally, by the movement of people, goods and ideas that has occurred over thousands of years.
A new temporary exhibition, Generations: Stories from South Asian St Albans, opened at St Albans Museum + Gallery in July and runs until 16th November 2025. While the exhibition is open, we want to continue to collect oral history recordings relating to 'South Asian St Albans' for our permanent collection.
Oral history recordings are a recorded audio interview with an individual about their life, or a particular aspect of their life. They are usually about an hour long, and are kept in our museum's permanent collection for research, education and exhibition purposes. Because they are interviews with real people, they give important and unique perspectives on the local area.
We'd love to hear from you if you'd like to become a volunteer and collect oral histories, or if you know someone who would make a good interviewee for stories about 'South Asian St Albans'.
