Gertie with the Pink Trousers, 2017, mixed media on canvas

Gertie with the Pink Trousers depicts the artist's mother’s house in Monrovia, Liberia. During the brutal civil war, her mother was forced to abandon the house and never managed to return.

In 2016, several years after her mother passed away, Henriette Busch visited Liberia - now run down and half ruined in the aftermath of the civil war. Busch found the old house still standing, neglected with paint peeling from the walls, the windows dark and uninviting, but with the garden well-tended. During her visit the artist met Gertie, a young girl now living in her mother’s house, who she photographed and then painted upon returning from her visit – a poignant look at loss and the life which continues beyond it.
