Still Lives, a major touring exhibition from The Hepworth Wakefield, bringing together more than 50 artworks by over 30 artists spanning nearly 400 years of art history.
From seventeenth-century Dutch masterpieces to works by some of today's most celebrated contemporary artists, this exhibition reveals how artists have transformed ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art.
This is the first time the exhibition has travelled to the South of England, giving visitors a rare opportunity to experience works by internationally recognised artists in St Albans.
'Still Lives' includes works by some of the biggest names in British and international art. Artists featured include Barbara Hepworth, Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson, Caroline Walker and Eva Rothschild, as well as Turner Prize nominees Anthea Hamilton and Rene Matić and winner Veronica Ryan, alongside remarkable Dutch masters from the seventeenth century.
Still life is one of art's oldest genres, but this exhibition shows just how varied and surprising it can be. Alongside paintings, you'll discover sculpture, photography, ceramics and works on paper, demonstrating how artists continue to reinvent and challenge the tradition today.
Historic works by Dutch artists Jacob Foppens van Es, Willem Ormea and Nicolaes van Verendael are displayed alongside contemporary creations, creating unexpected conversations across centuries.
The exhibition includes additional works from the University of Hertfordshire Art Collection, featuring celebrated paintings by Ben Nicholson and an installation by craft artist and University of Hertfordshire alumna Katy Gillam-Hull.
