Longing, 2019, mixed media

Dave Nelson’s small, square wooden panels are layered with material. With inspection it is possible to see how every mark is made, every piece assembled. Natural and organic overlaying structure and form - marks, scrapings, symbols, colour and collage build on these panels.

Each layer is applied fresh on a new day, the artist working instinctively. A new feeling responding to what has been expressed before. Each coat very different, as well as responding, communicating.

Strata upon strata an abstract image emerges; finished when the artist is in harmony with it, and it is at peace with itself.

Dave Nelson

“I do not know why I am an artist.  Why did I quit a well-paid job to spend my days in mess, covering boards with coloured paint, a glorified pre-schooler?  “What have you done today dear?” The answer can boil down to “cut-and-paste”.  I am no closer to knowing now than 5 years ago, but am driven on in a relentless pursuit of describing…what I am.”
