The Civic Centre, St Peter’s Street

“Hello, I’m the newbie on this block.  I only arrived here in 1988 after my illustrious neighbour, the Alban Arena was deemed too small for the council’s offices.  We are still linked though – look up, there’s a bridge between us at first floor level.
My outside is a very different style, more Roman temple, sort of rounded and curvy. I have the 7 flags of our twin towns on my wall, and an old fashioned police station lamp, just like Dixon of Dock Green – you know “Evenin’ all.” No? Oh well.
Inside I’m offices, more offices and a community hub – volunteer centre, police station and so on.  The Mayor has a parlour, though it’s not all tea and cakes in there.  The Council Chamber is very grand, dominated by the City’s coat of arms, representing some early history of the town, the Abbey, the Magna Carta and the 3rd printing press in England.
Down in my basement, you’ll notice some very heavy steel doors, which can close to form a nuclear shelter, just in case!  I was built to last!”
