I am a designer, graphic artist, and art and architectural historian who has lived in and around St Albans all of my life.
With a creative flair and analytical eye, I am fascinated by images and words so have combined both the typographic and architectural features from the ‘Commit no nuisance’ door in my submitted artwork.
I used elements from the history of the clock tower and instruction to recreate the wood grain effect in the door. At the bottom left the story starts from the beginning of the clock tower and builds to the sign at the top of the door, where the ‘Commit no nuisance’ instruction repeats more intensely as overlaid text to reveal the actual sign itself in white.
Using fonts and colours inspired by the door to shade the story and reveal details my artwork is currently at 1:100 scale at A4 size. Firstly, I hand sketched the door and sign in pencil on watercolour paper. This sketch was then photographed and using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator these elements combined with a hint of colour to create the final artwork.
