Archaeology at Roman Verulamium: Monday 2nd November 10am or 1pm
Activities suitable for ages 6-11. Ticket price includes all activities on the day and an annual pass allowing you to re-visit Verulamium as many times as you want over the next 12 months. There is also the option to choose a child only ticket if you already have the pass.
Choose either the morning or the afternoon session and take part in activities led by our museum team -
- Introduction to Archaeology with a 'blanket dig' led by one of our museum team to uncover genuine artefacts that were once buried in the ground at Verulamium, then choose an item from the finds tray to complete your own archaeological record
- Make a Roman oil lamp with one of our museum team. See examples of Roman lamps then work with air drying clay to create your own as a decorative ornament
Time to explore on your own including -
- Choice of museum trails to hunt for objects in the galleries
- Dressing up – who will you be from Roman Verulamium and what’s your story?
- Arch building, Mosaic Design and Coin Rubbing – can you construct an arch that stays up, create a Roman style mosaic using small tiles called tesserae or keep your paper steady while you make a rubbing of our giant coin?
- Use of lunch room to eat your packed lunch
- Calm zone if you need some quite time or space
- Roman herb garden with guide to help you identify the most commonly used flavours
- Hypocaust - one of the earliest underfloor heating systems with a mosaic covering just a short walk from the museum
