History is filled with magic. At times the supernatural was feared, but just as often it was embraced and even used as a tool by everyone from the lowliest peasant to the grandest monarch. This talk will explore the beliefs of people in later medieval and early modern England, and introduce you to some magical practices along the way.

Dr Tabitha Stanmore

Dr Tabitha Stanmore is a specialist in the history of magic and witchcraft. Her book Cunning Folk: Life in the Era of Practical Magic won the Folklore Society’s Katherine Briggs Award in 2024 and was a New York Times pick of the month.
